This course raises students’ awareness of cultural issues in language learning and cross-cultural communication. It provides students with basic knowledge of British and American cultures, including: the country, the society, the beliefs and values, the education, and the important celebrations. These knowledge items are epxected to enrich and deepen students’ content knowledge of the English language, and thus contribute to their abilites of using the target language appropriately with people from Britain and America. On the basis of this course, students’ conceptions of cultural issues in communication are enhanced so that they are motivated to study further about other cultures that they may encounter in their daily lives or at work after graduation.
